How the cubic yard calculator works

Landscape materials and concrete are often sold by the cubic yard in the US. The calculator works out the volume in cubic feet and divides by 27, the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard (3 × 3 × 3):

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27

All three inputs are in feet, including depth. Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12, so 3 inches = 0.25 ft and 4 inches = 0.333 ft.

Worked example: mulch for a 10 ft × 12 ft bed, 4 inches deep

  1. Depth: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
  2. 10 × 12 × 0.333 = 40 ft³
  3. 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards

Most suppliers sell in half or quarter yards, so you'd order 1.5 yd³. For bagged mulch (often 2 ft³ bags), 40 ÷ 2 = 20 bags.

Typical depths

MaterialTypical depth
Mulch2–4 in
Topsoil for a new lawn4–6 in
Gravel path2–4 in over a base
Concrete patio or walkway4 in
Concrete driveway4–6 in

If you know the area in square feet and the depth in inches, the square feet to cubic yards calculator saves a step.

Converting to metric

One cubic yard = 0.7646 m³, and one cubic metre = 1.308 yd³.

Common mistakes

How many cubic feet in a cubic yard?

27 cubic feet (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft).

How much area does a cubic yard of mulch cover?

About 108 ft² at 3 inches deep, or 81 ft² at 4 inches.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

Roughly 2,600–3,000 lb (about 1.3–1.5 US tons), depending on the stone and moisture.
