How the percentage calculator works
A percentage says how much of a whole something is, out of 100:
Percentage = part ÷ whole × 100
Worked examples
You scored 45 out of 60: 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%
18 of 24 team members voted: 18 ÷ 24 × 100 = 75%
$320 of a $1,280 budget spent: 320 ÷ 1,280 × 100 = 25%

Mental maths shortcuts
10%: move the decimal point one place left (10% of 250 = 25)
5%: half of 10% (12.50)
1%: move the decimal two places (2.50)
X% of Y equals Y% of X: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4
Percentages vs percentage points
If an interest rate goes from 4% to 5%, it has risen by 1 percentage point, but by 25% in relative terms. News reports often mix these up. For changes over time, use the percentage change calculator.
Common mistakes
Putting the numbers the wrong way round (60 ÷ 45 instead of 45 ÷ 60).
Adding percentages that have different bases.
Forgetting that 100% is the whole. More than 100% means the part is bigger than the whole.
How do I work out a percentage of a total?
Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is 25%.
How do I calculate 20% of a number?
Multiply the number by 0.2. For example, 20% of 350 = 70.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
A percentage point is an absolute difference between percentages (4% to 5% is 1 point). Percent change is relative (a 25% rise).
